Women Who Reign: Aisha Hasan

Hi! My name is Aisha and I’m a 19 year old college junior from Houston, Texas currently studying Computer Science and Chemistry at Barnard College, Columbia University. I’m currently working on increasing women in the tech field on a more academic level by planning Columbia’s first female hackathon with Women in Computer Science. My fun fact is that I actually own a pet camel named Stuart who really loves to eat my grandma’s handmade rotis.

What # would define your life journey?

Favorite website / app:
I love using Yelp (literally have used it to look up everything from pedicures to the best elotes in town). The interface is really easy to use and I’ve been a fan for the past 7 years. I discovered my interest for technology a little early on using cool apps like Yelp really helped.

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
Amal Clooney. She is fierce and a fighter who doesn’t care for what people say about her as long as she believes she is doing the right thing. Young girls need more women who can encourage them to follow their dreams no matter what field they plan to pursue and for me she’s the one.

Song that makes you want to dance:
I would definitely say some old school High School musical tunes.

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
My interest in technology began when I was 10 or so and I took apart a computer and put it back together because I wanted to add in neon lights. No one believed that I did it myself and that an older male cousin must have done it for me to take the credit. Hearing things like this when I was growing up (not my parents, they’ve been nothing but supportive) was not the ideal situation. Having access to resources in middle and high school where I was able to pursue my interest in STEM really pushed to get me where I am now. Thanks to the negativity, I’ve learned to channel it into fuel to make my way into the tech field and push past societal constraints.

Ideal Job:
My current dream job would be a software engineer or a product manager in larger tech company so I could situate myself with the field. From there I hope to pursue what I’ll find more interesting in the tech field after gaining experience. Hopefully 10 years from now I’ll have made some changes in the world whether they be with AI,VR, or the crossroads between tech and social justice.

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Every time I feel little bogged down I remember this quote: “You’re not the kind of girl who settles. Keep not settling.” – Joy Wilson. It picks me back up and gives me the little push I need! This can be whether sometimes I feel a little overworked or I feel excluded because many times I’m the only hijabi in the room.
