Women Who Reign: Anisha Salunkhe

“Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.”

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
Hi! I’m Anisha Salunkhe. I’m a third year student at UC Berkeley studying Cognitive Science with a concentration in Computer Science. I chose to study this field because I am really interested in the intersection between people and technology! It’s so fascinating to see how things that are so uniquely human (like language and other cognitive processes) can be applied to and modeled by technology. The possible applications of cognitive science are endless, and that really excites me!

Apart from that, I love traveling, solving puzzles, singing, and spending time with my family! Last summer I interned at Intuit and had a really fun introduction to computing in the industry. Fun fact: I came to Berkeley as a Molecular Cell Biology major. It wasn’t until I took an intro programming class at college that I decided to trade in microscopes for some code!

What # would define your life journey?

Favorite website / app:
Pinterest! It’s my go-to place for creative inspiration, recipes, and more. 🙂

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
My dad is definitely one of the most inspirational and significant people in my life. He is always full of optimism and positivity. He is ready to take on every challenge and stay afloat even when things look tough. He taught me not to shy away from opportunities and stay upbeat through every endeavor. Anything is possible if you have the right mindset!

Song that makes you want to dance:
anything Beyonce!

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed when studying computer science at Berkeley. There have been more times than I can remember when I felt so terribly beat down by a hard project or a difficult midterm. I would be so discouraged and would start feeling like I just was not good enough. But the truth is, everyone around me was going through a lot of the same hardships. It’s so easy to feel alone, but that’s never the case. I reached out and found support from my peers and we all worked hard together. My friends and I keep each other motivated now. I found the most amazing support system in them and we quickly realized that one bad midterm doesn’t define us.

Ideal Job:
I really love working with people, learning new things and coming up with creative solutions. Any job that lets me do all of those is a winner!

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Don’t doubt yourself! Don’t be afraid of the unknown and take all the opportunities you get. I learned this the hard way. There have been so many times when I have cheated myself of an opportunity just because I was afraid I wasn’t good enough. I was too scared to even try. There was no point because in my mind I had already accepted defeat. And after walking past way too many open doors, I finally realized nothing should be keeping me from giving myself a chance. The more shots I took, the more I made! So as cheesy as it may sound, always believe in yourself and don’t ever doubt that you’re capable. Take that shot! Who knows what it could lead to? 🙂
