Women Who Reign: Rachel Alexander

“You are more powerful than you know; you are beautiful just as you are.” ~ Melissa Etheridge

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I’m a sophomore at USC majoring in computer science and minoring in linguistics. I love speech technology and computational linguistics, and currently work in a research lab studying speech production. In my free time, I TA for a freshman CS class and serve on executive board of USC’s Association for Computing Machinery, and over the summer, I teach Java, Lego, and art classes to elementary school kids at a summer camp, and tutor high school students in AP Computer Science. I love to read and explore new places in LA, and my favorite food is Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter.

Fun fact: My life goal is to be on Jeopardy!

What # would define your life journey?

Favorite website / app:
Does a Chrome extension count? I love Momentum, which replaces the new tab page with a photograph, inspirational quote, and personal to-do list. It’s a nice visual break from all the work I’m constantly looking at on my laptop.

Song that makes you want to dance:
BØRNS- Electric Love

Ideal Job:
Working on anything involving speech or language technology— especially Google Translate or Amazon Alexa.

What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Prioritize your mental health. If that means dropping a commitment that is causing you more stress than benefit, do it. Take time for yourself, spend time on activities that make you happy or with people you love. Sleep! If you need to seek help to stay mentally healthy, don’t be afraid to reach out. No matter how successful you are, you need to put yourself first.
