Women Who Reign: Diana Chen

“You have to find your own luck.” – Unknown

Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
I’m a current Computer Science student at Arizona State University, but I’m originally from the suburbs of Chicago. Outside of coding, I love exploring, bullet journaling, and baking (as long as there’s a baking mix involved).

What # would define your life journey?

Favorite website / app:

Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
Someone who inspires me and knowledge they have imparted: I really look up to Jamee Lind – a Journalism and Economics major at my school. She was the first person to really introduce me to entrepreneurship, and she never stopped pushing me to pursue my dreams. She truly taught me how much empowerment can strengthen other people, and she constantly inspires me to go after my ambitions. Because of her, I’ve not only become an entrepreneur, but I’ve also learned how I would like to inspire and advocate others in the future.

Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
One of the biggest technical challenges I faced was creating a my first UI component for my first internship. The team I was working on created UI components for the whole company to use, and up until then, I had only gotten to work on lower-hanging fruit and smaller bug tickets. While it wasn’t an overly complex component, I struggled a lot since I was only a freshman and I felt I had to prove myself to my colleagues and to myself. For the longest time, I was afraid of asking for help because I felt like this big endeavor was something I had to take on on my own. Eventually, I gave in and decided to ask for help from my colleagues, and immediately I began to see improvement. In the end, I not only learned a lot from the internship, but I also realized how important it is to not be afraid to ask for help.

Ideal Job:
Creating/developing solutions to make technology and education more successful.

Never be afraid to ask. As someone who is naturally more passive, it’s so much easier for me to sit back and allow life to pass by, but I’ve realized now more than ever how many doors can open for you if you ask. I know it’s so cliche, but the worst people can say is “No,” and that just brings you closer to another possible “Yes.”
