“I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion” – Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song”
Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
Hey! We’re Taylor Fang, Anne Li, and Joanna Liu, all current high school sophomores. In the summer of 2017, as attendees at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Outreach Summer Program (SAILORS), we started talking about the lack of girls in many technology activities we participated in. We decided to start the collaborative blog Allgirlithm (allgirlithm.weebly.com), to try and address this gap. We share news, opportunities, and resources, along with guest posts, with the hope that we can build confidence in people of all backgrounds.
Fun fact:Allgirlithm is a pun on algorithm. We liked the name especially because of the “all,” which embodied our mission of encouraging everyone, especially girls, to try out CS.
What # would define your life journey?
Favorite website / app:
We love Khanacademy and Codeacademy, places where the spirit of learning is vibrant. They have a lot of resources for people of all backgrounds, and it’s a quite inclusive community. They are both great places to learn something new.
Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
Fei-Fei Li and Olga Russakovsky, the founders of SAILORS, definitely inspired us to start this blog and start reaching out to others. They demonstrated to us the impact that everyone can have, and were key motivators. Without SAILORS, we wouldn’t have been able to meet and share experiences.
Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
We didn’t have many resources or support around us prior to SAILORS, which is one of the reasons we started Allgirlithm. It’s pretty intimidating for anyone to start out in an advanced and quickly growing field, especially as a minority. We wanted to profile female role models, similar to ReigningIt, but perhaps from a different perspective.
On the flip side, there’s been a lot of support from the AI4ALL (SAILORS umbrella group) alumni community, and we’re excited to start having several blog post writers.
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Be persistent in your field and pursuits, and give lots of encouragement to each other. It’s important to have networks of support; back up everyone and connect with people. Collaboration and teamwork are not only effective, but also a ton of fun.
