Tell us about yourself along with a fun fact!
My name is Abneris Lugo-Morales, I’m 22 years old, and currently pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in Math at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, San Germán Campus. I’m also doing a research in the area of Quantum Computing and Quantum Encryption.
Fun fact: At night you can see me staring at the sky and recognizing the stars and constellations. You can say that I love space and stars. That’s why my favorite franchise of movies is Star Wars!
What # would define your life journey?
Favorite website / app:
I would say those are Pinterest and Youtube. I spent so many hours looking for diverse tutorials! Both are such handy websites, where you can spend learning with tutorials and having fun by watching vlogs, music videos, etc.
Someone who inspires you and knowledge they have imparted:
I will definitely say that my dad is the one who inspires me to become a better person each day and to follow my dreams no matter what.
Challenge you’ve faced and how you overcame it:
As my undergraduate life is coming to an end, I’m currently searching for Graduate Schools where I can pursue a M.S. degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, where most of the good programs are based in universities at the U.S. This has been a difficult journey, because I live with my grandparents, who don’t seem to like the idea of me going to the U.S. and be all by myself there. But for what I’ve been experiencing, is that I can’t give up now, because if I do, I’ll regret it. It’s been hard and even tear wrecking, but I know they will understand one day that this is the path I choose to fulfill my goals of becoming who I want to be.
Since I began the university, I’ve been lost in terms of what to do with my life. That’s when, in my second year of my B.S. I enter this beautiful outreach program called Google IgniteCS, where a group of undergrads, from diverse backgrounds, go to a local school in the area of Mayagüez and teach the high school students the basics of Computer Science.
This project helped me realized the love and passion I have for helping students realize what they want to do when they enter university. A simple “my code is running!” or “I really love programming” can truly change your life in this aspect. So I would say that my ideal job is to become a professor in programming and help our future generations become the top of the top.
What knowledge would you impart to women in order for them to REIGN their lives?
Never give up!
No matter if you don’t receive the support you wish for, don’t throw away your dreams and the opportunities that life gives you. Take them! Be your own support! It may be difficult at first but later you’ll see the gratification of accomplishing your dreams and goals.
Don’t give up! Remember, “failure is not an option!”
